The Rottnest Island Authority says more than 70 people whose approval for accommodation on the island was posted on the Internet will miss out on a place to stay after a major bungle. The company which conducts the ballot neglected to include 189 of the 4, 200 applicants, forcing the authority's chief executive officer to demand the ballot be redrawn. Paolo Amaranti says 76 families will miss out in the new ballot and the only way they will be able to secure accommodation on the island west of Perth is through the redraw for places which become available due to cancellations. "I'm hoping that the 76 would benefit from the next one, " he said. "In terms of the cancellation process, those 76 go back in the ballot. But it is a random choice, a computer random choice so I cannot determine whether they will be successful or not. " Posted 31 July 2004
